Both presidents have been vilified as the worst to take the reigns as commander in chief, and both have become cult classics in the field of tyrannical American leaders. Both also have expanded the role of the executive government in one way or another to a disturbing degree. Question: Which President was worse, Nixon or Bush?

Nixon's Offenses: Orchestrating the break ins at the Watergate Complex in order to gain information on current and potential political adversaries. Using executive powers to commit a varying degree of crimes which includes campaign fraud, political espionage and sabotage, illegal break-ins, improper tax audits, illegal wiretapping on a massive scale, and building a secret slush fund to pay off potential whistle blowers. Also for having a very schizoid and paranoid personality during his years in power.

Personal dichotomy: While many feel that Nixon suffered from a severe moral deficit, he is considered to have followed a very pragmatic approach to governing , something absent in current politics (ignoring the whole Watergate thing).

Bush's Offenses: Vastly expanding the role of the executive branch to a very intimidating degree through the cover of "executive privilege," orchestrating the lies behind the Iraq war, Isolating the US from the rest of the world, supporting mass anti-intellectualism, a series of political controversies involving e-mails Alberto Gonzalez, Florida 2000 election controversy, allowing (and sometimes condoning) the use of torture on "enemy combatants," spying on American citizens, coercion, perjury and encouraging perjury amongst low level employees, Karl Rove, undermining checks and balances and all of those lovely "Bush isms" that make this country look good.

Personal dichotomy: For all of his faults, he has the personality which makes you almost feel sorry for him (in the same way you feel sorry for a retarded child who just hit his/her mother with a blunt object).

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Um, did we forget a few little somethings about Bush?

  • Personal responsibility for the deaths of at least 1,250,000 innocent Iraqis at the price of US $1,000,000 per death.
  • Oh and the deaths of at least 4,000 US soldiers and the maiming of at least 30,000 more US soldiers.
  • Personal responsibility for failing to protect the country during the attacks of 9/11/2001 resulting in the deaths of at least 2,740 Americans.
  • Personal responsibility for spending and deregulation doubling the US debt until it is impossible to service, resulting in our dollar diving - leading directly to astronomical gas prices and the imminent failure of our once all-powerful economy.
  • Personal responsibility for bugging the phones, email, and financial transactions of all Americans in direct contravention of our Constitution.

I don't care if you want to feel sorry for him or if you think he's a puppet. He's responsible. Next to this bastard Richard Nixon looks like Thomas frickin' Jefferson.

It's incredibly easy to lose track of the pitiful overspending and deregulation when trying to understand the scope of the entire eight year tragedy. And your last sentence reminded me of something Mr Thompson said:

"Nixon was a professional politician, and I despised everything he stood for — but if he were running for president this year against the evil Bush-Cheney gang, I would happily vote for him."

    -Hunter S. Thompson
